Chrysler and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have released a recall alert for close to 87,000 model year 2010 Jeep Wranglers in North America and possibly elsewhere due to fire risks.
The recall, affecting automatic vehicles made before July 14, 2010, is necessary since it is possible for debris and other matter to get trapped between the catalytic converter and a plate protecting the transmission. The trapped material can heat up and cause a fire.
The American automaker said that it is aware of at least 14 fires that may have been caused by heated debris. As of the time of this writing, the carmaker says that it has not heard of anyone being injured by the fires.
Chrysler is contacting owners to inform them of the danger and to let them know that the problem will be fixed free of charge. This recall should not affect insurance rates for Jeep Wranglers, but is a real safety risk, so get it fixed!
