According to statistics from the Insurance Institutes for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the number of miles that Americans are driving is up and traffic fatalities are down. Despite this increase in traffic safety, trucks remain more dangerous than cars. Among trucks, there are some models that are the least safe. Here is a list of them.
- Jeep Wrangler
- Chevrolet Colorado extended cab/GMC Canyon extended cab
- Ford Ranger regular cab
- Chevrolet Colorado regular cab/GMC Canyon regular cab
- Dodge Dakota
Each of these vehicles was ranked without the optional side airbags. The results were based on crash tests done by the IIHS and the NHTSA. Each of these trucks either scored marginal or worse on side and rear impact. As a general rule, all vehicles are safer than they were 25 years ago, these trucks are simply lagging behind the rest of the industry.
Unfortuantely, you can see here that the Wrangler is at the top of the list, so it’s surprising that insurance rates for Jeep Wrangler aren’t higher.
